John Smiley is a former Major League Baseball pitcher who played for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Minnesota Twins, Cincinnati Reds, and Cleveland Indians during his 13-year career from 1986 to 1999. He was known for his solid left-handed pitching and his competitive nature on the mound.
Smiley was drafted by the Pirates in the 12th round of the 1983 MLB Draft and made his major league debut in 1986. He quickly became a reliable starter for the Pirates, earning an All-Star selection in 1991 and finishing third in Cy Young Award voting that year.
Throughout his career, Smiley compiled a record of 126-103 with a 3.80 ERA and 1,086 strikeouts in 1,864 innings pitched. He was a key member of the Pirates' pitching staff during their successful run in the early 1990s.
After retiring from baseball, Smiley went on to work as a pitching coach for the Pirates and an assistant baseball coach at the University of Alabama-Birmingham. He currently resides in Alabama with his family.
